AP Nonfiction Bookclub -- First Semester

Objective/Goals:
  • to build base of knowledge that may be called on in crafting an open response argument on the AP exam
  • to practice close reading and rhetorical analysis on a full length text
  • to strengthen critical reading skills
  • to collaborate with peers on expanding and deepening intellectual, academic conversations
  • to identify an author’s intended audience and purpose; to evaluate how a text is crafted
  • to write a rhetorical précis
Procedure:
  • Preview texts; choose three and rank them 1-2-3 in case you don’t get your first or second choice
  • Participate in the book selection activity in class (Thursday, 10/5); if you are absent, I will assign a proxy to fill in and make decisions on your behalf
  • Meet with your book club; create a schedule for reading
  • Create a two pages in your notebook devoted to this project
  • As you read, start to make SOAPS notes:  what is author’s purpose in writing this book?  What is the author’s point?  Thesis?  How successful is the author? What can you say about the topic? What do you know already, and what do you want to know?
  • Find rich passages that you admire (or loathe); find vocabulary worth studying
  • Come to every book club meeting having completed the agreed upon reading, and prepared to participate whole-heartedly

The work:
  • Vocabulary development -- 5 weeks, 5 books
  • Select a passage (minimum 400 words) for rhetorical analysis
  • Keep up with the reading; attend and participate in four book club meetings
    • Book Club Activities TBA (Lit Circle X 2; Save the Last Word; 20 Questions)
  • Read chapter 1: write a rhetorical précis; submit to Turnitin.com
  • 750 word book review; three drafts; submit draft 2 & 3 to Turnitin.com
