Road to Character Purpose

In Road to Character, written by David Brooks, Brooks expresses the journey people take to find their true character. He writes this book not only for the public, but also for himself and anyone else that is going through similar struggles. He discusses the difficulties and shares stories about other people's experiences while discovering their own character. Brooks begins the novel with an introduction stating that there are two types of people: Adam I and Adam II. He describes Adam I as a selfish character who only cares about himself and constantly complains about the things he doesn’t have. Adam I often would wine about everything he wanted, but would never put in effort to do so. However, Adam II does not prioritize himself in front of others and does not seek validation about his wants and needs. He uses a variety of different stories to allow the readers to understand different viewpoints and ways to develop a persons character. The purpose of this novel was to help himself and others interpret the struggles that come along with the advancement of your self realization.
