Modern Mediums of Communication

"For although culture is a creation of speech, it is recreated anew by every medium of communication- from painting to hieroglyphs to the alphabet to television" (Postman 10).

Postman talks about how different "mediums of conversation" create culture. He lists a variety of mediums which can be found across a very large timeline. Each form of communication created a different type of culture which people adapted to and learned to use efficiently to convey their ideas. Thinking in this sense, wouldn't television just be another medium of conversation people have adapted to? Ever since the first forms of communication, technology has been adapting, and people adapt along with it. It makes sense that people have learned to communicate using images which people around the world can see within seconds.

Ever since early time, people have been diffusing their ideas. Ever since the first civilizations made contact with one another ideas began to spread, and this became a part of culture. People enjoy sharing their opinions and ideas on anything and everything. The only difference is what is relevant to the people's culture. Many years ago philosophical and religious text were relevant to people, and now people are concerned with Taylor Swift's latest relationship and whatever Kim Kardashian is doing.

  1. I agree with the whole idea about how the “mediums of conversations” create our culture. In fact that is how most of culture is created. Now that many people have turned to a cellular device to communicate it has generated a new form of dialogue that our own society has produced. Because looking around you will see different people with different ideas and a different lifestyle. Although, the way they conversate may create their culture it also creates the attitude and enthusiasm one has. Thus it creates that culture and environment.

  2. I'm with you on that. I believe philosophical and religious content is still relevant today. (Yes, not so much text, but content.) However, these days, many people are primarily focused towards entertainment and the new gossip. Our culture now has become shallow and fruitless as opposed to the discussions about deeper matters in the past. Not to say that there isn't any more deep discussions, but it is worth to note that they were once the most prominent subjects in daily matters. The difference in culture shows where priorities now lie, and it's worrying to see where our generation is going with it.
