Are We Letting Things Such As Technology Jeopardize Our Creativity?

Technology has been a massive impact on people's lives and it continuously causes distractions the more advanced it gets. Throughout the years it has continued to bring negative effects on our lives  and the loss of creativity being one of them in this case. Being apart of asb has allowed me to be apart of a group of people who have amazing ideas and creative thoughts. Although over the years I have seen a minor default in our creativity level. Now I do not think this is because we are not creative but I do  believe we are not taking the time to be. For instance Susan Linn states that “we are deprived of our own creativity because we do not take the time to give ourselves the space, time and silence we need”. Today's society doesn't give themselves the time to be alone because they are constantly using social media throughout the day and every chance they get. Our free time has become technology driven by social media whereas it used to be going outside and watching the clouds move.

However most people use social media to get ideas and to get creative. For example the idea posted on pinterest are widely used and copied.  Not only does social media take our time away from generating new ideas but the apps like Pinterest give us an easy way out of our own ideas. Therefore there is really no mental effort when you are just imitating others creativity. Considering the information above I strongly believe if we do make time and give ourselves the space we need, we as a society will develop our own individual imaginations.

  1. Your points are very valid, and I highly agree with them. Social media plays a big role in both positions as it does take away creativity and our ability to think "outside the box;" however, it can also allow us to form ideas or be inspired by seeing other people's posts. Sure, we observe other people and want to steal their ideas, but this way we can make adjustments to make it our own and want to be creative ourselves. The media is full of many different forms of art, so in a way, the media certainly does contribute to creativity. Ultimately, it depends on the person and their use of the media.
