Creativity Is Going Nowhere

In New York Time’s Is Creativity Endangered, Richard Florida’s idea of an inexhaustible amount of creativity is an interesting point of view that I happen to agree with. He writes about creativity’s place as a social process that people learn from through competition and collaboration with others. Creativity can never fade because of large number of people that happen to be looking for a job in heavily populated areas. Facilities in the area are looking for those who stand out in the crowd of applicants: Therefore, people are continuously competing with each other in order to get their desired position.

However, creativity “follows the same general contours of the great socio-economic divide” (Florida). Those who wish to rise higher above the rest must compete with others in order to reach their goal, while those who work at lower leveled jobs must endure the tight control over their creative abilities. People’s ability to be creative can be compared to the rich and poor. The rich have the liberty to buy more merchandise that can range from paintings to sports cars. They want to impress people with what they have. Much like the people who aspire to higher places in society. The poor do not have that luxury, their limited amount of money is like the limited amount of creativity allowed by low paying jobs.

Even though society does not support every single person's creativity, that does not mean it is not flourishing and developing with each new generation. In fact, it is constantly growing with each new cure for diseases and new iphone that comes out. Our support for creativity should be encouraged, especially towards the next generation. Only then can creativity pass its already vast sphere of influence.

  1. I never thought of creativity being related to social classes. I do agree that people with more money and a better lifestyle seem to have more credibility. This helps them to be able to put ideas out into the world easily and get more attention. However, I would say that anyone is able to rise up to that level in society, much like the greatest inventors in history. Society should make a step into appreciating creativity more and give the opportunity for people to bestow their ability of creating into the world.
