After reading "Is Creativity Endangered?" I quickly realized how much of an impact our environment has on our mindset.
One author that I thoroughly agreed with was Susan Linn. She states that the access we have to screen time or different types of technology is depriving us from our creativity. In today's society, it is very common for young kids to be involved in many extracurricular activities. Although this is a great way to encourage kids to be active and involved, it lessens their availability to be creative. Creativity takes time, and by over-scheduling, they don't have the patience to do so.
Often times, kids creativity comes from being bored and not having much to do. When people are uninterested and don't have much to do, they tend to turn to creative activities to entertain themselves. However, our access to different forms of entertainment make creativity seem useless. What's the point in trying to make something up yourself when you can just watch TV? Why think creatively when you can simply just go on your smartphone? Many people agree that these different forms of entertainment definitely have benefits. Many kids can watch something online or on TV and be inspired from it. They can use this inspiration to be creative and furthermore expand their knowledge. However, this takes away from true, genuine creativity that can form in a person.

I agree with you that technology is taking away from creativity. However, technology is evidence that creativity is prospering. Technology is complex, even using technology can become confusing. Technology would not exist without creativity. They both rely on each other. Many people tend to resort to technology when they are bored, like you said, but technology can inspire people. Seeing all of these new functions and options on smartphones can make people question technology and how it is made. Creativity takes place in most activities. Playing a sport takes creativity when deciding how to make the next move or what the best way to win is. I believe that creativity is not endangered, but increasing.
ReplyDeleteThe point you make about the effects of technology on the mind's capability of creativity is exactly what I was thinking while I was scrolling through the article. In some angles it seems as if technology prohibits one's creativity to evolve because they have the internet or tv to satisfy their need for anything creative. Ya get me? However, as a result of technology serving as a base for creativity, it also has the capacity to inspire others and get their creative juices flowing. Social media, google, icloud, etc are outlets that allow people to showcase their creativity and gives it a chance to spread around for others to see. Therefore, I agree with you and Mikaela in the fact that technology is halting the mind's aptitude of creativity only to restart and upgrade it.
ReplyDeleteSorry, it's not icloud. I meant soundcloud.
DeleteYou make very valid points, Priya. I also agree with you that the quota of technology has been taking away from our creativity and innovation. But, can we agree that technology also is beneficial to our explore our curiosities? Commercial products such as T.V., smartphones, or all other fancy items are simple tools we can use when we are bored and want to satisfy our mind and body's drive at that moment. I think that technology doesn't endanger our creativity, but bolsters it. We can draw many conclusions that technology may inspire us to do. As Raqsmoney said, the creation of social media elaborates on this idea of creativity. It is a source of media that enables us to showcase our creativity, and share our innovation with others.
ReplyDeleteMany of the advancements with technology have caused many distractions, especially with the younger generation. Sure, many can argue that technology is a way for us to get away from things and can cause us to lose our creative side but, like you all said, it is also a way for the younger generation to become more creative. Many ideas that we get, come from the internet, and people that we strive to be like, are on TV. An example would be with sports. I agree with Mikaela when she states that sports are a way for children to gain creativity, since the majority of sports involve fast pace thinking. Often, time management is tough when playing a sport and trying to finish school work, but this also allows us to think outside of the box, in order to finish all of our school work, while enjoying the extracurricular activities.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Priya. Extracurricular activities do take away too much time in the day that it gives us less time to be creative, but doing extracurricular activities could also help us be creative. In Richard Louv's argument "Environment challenges Invite Creativity", he explains that being with nature could help people have more creativity. Extracurricular activities mostly get involved outdoors, so people could gain more creativity while doing activities. The outside world has many problems, and people think differently and have new ideas when they come in contact with it.
