According to Oxford Dictionaries, aesthetics is defined as "a set of principles concerned with the nature and appreciation of beauty." We've all probably heard that word floating around and associate it with objects or sceneries that are pleasing to the eye. But how exactly does it affect our society today?
When we think of a social media platform like Instagram, what do we think of? Photos, right? This app was made so the public could share their photos accompanied by their thoughts; this can range from a minimalist brunch flat lay, a chill day at home with your dog, you and your significant other before date night, and of course, selfies. I'd say I'm guilty for making everybody wait before eating so I can take a quick shot. But it seems that nowadays, places prioritize the need to look photo-ready, sometimes even important things like good customer service. But why? Because it'll make our feed look nice?
It looks like Neil Postman was right in that we have let media guide our lives and basically "amuse ourselves to death." Not everyone feels the same about social media but for the most part, I think that many of us have gotten so used to capturing a moment with a camera, we haven't given ourselves time to actually enjoy what's going on quite literally in front of us. It's up to us to be more aware and realize that there is a time and place for everything but not all at once.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you because now a days it's all about taking pictures of where you are at and posting them on social media. You need to be there in the moment and learn to share it with people, whether it be friends or family or just you alone. There's more to life than what is on the phone.
