Maybe It's Not as Bad as Many of Us Thought...

So, I was listening to my Grandmother and the rest of  my old family members speak to each other, in what I like to call, the Sauerkraut Circle (They basically just sit in a circle around the mini fridge filled with sauerkraut).  And of course, they're old and don't really like the new technology.  This time, they were talking about music, more specifically, about how they would go to the record shop and buy the newest Frank Sinatra or Bobby Darin record.  They were talking about how stupid it was to go online and download the newest album of our favorite artists.  I'm a very huge music nerd, so, I stepped into said circle and got my great aunt so mad that she threatened to not give me my art supplies  that she had just bought for me.
Basically, my argument was that instead of buying an entire album from a record selling place, you can just download one song from an artist that you like.  Plus, if you're a person who was born in the post synth-pop era, you aren't going to get your hands on that Strawberry Switchblade album from '85 so easily.  Maybe you like The Chordettes, or perhaps, The Ink Spots.  Now, what are the odds that you'll find a record from the late 30's at a low price and not with a high three-digit number price tag on it?  The internet makes looking for and getting those songs so much easier.  Plus, if you don't really want all the entire "Nothing To Fear"  album, you can just download whatever Oingo Boingo song from the album that you actually enjoy.  It seems like everyone nowadays is demonizing the internet for being so mind-altering and overall, just a bad influence on out tiny, teenager brains.  There are good things about it! It's not as bad as we like to think it is.

  1. The internet has its highs and lows but I do agree that in terms of music, downloading it instead of physically buying the records is way simpler. Yes, having a physical copy like a record is considered a memento for some but let's face it, it's just not as practical in our time anymore; in our generation, I know that most wouldn't even play it but rather just display it as decor. It could be because of the generation gap but this is just one of those things that really depends on one's preference. So yeah, the internet isn't as bad after all, I mean there is a reason why we depend on it so much.

  2. Yes the internet has made it easier to download music but there is also a joy of going to a record store and buying a physical copy of your favorite album. But also they do come in handy when you have the chance of meeting your favorite band or artist. You can't exactly ask Metallica to sign their "Ride The Lightning" album that is downloaded on your phone. Personally I still buy physical albums and records still but I also download music on my phone, like how you mentioned just a few songs off an album instead of purchasing an entire album. Our generation lives off the internet and modern technology, you see kindergarteners with brand new iPhones at school. Of course it’s not the best thing but the internet has become very helpful now, it’s just some people tend to abuse the fact that we have the world at our fingertips. The internet isn’t mind-altering unless you make it.
