Our phone is now becoming the centerpiece of our life. In Amusing Ourselves to Death, Neil Postman said that T.V. is becoming show business and our life is becoming all about entertainment. I agree with this statement, but I want to add on that our constant advancements and dependency on our phones is shaping our lives altogether. Our lifestyle is now changing in the way that we are becoming a futuristic culture. Everything is now accessible to us, and it is more convenient. Our phone is our main priority when leaving our house, we take it everywhere we go. No matter if it is the restroom, to eat, or to even go for a walk. Currently, we are currently living in a fast pace society, so everything is at our disposal. With a touch of a button, we can have absolutely anything that we may want. Our phones today have an unlimited capacity to do anything that we desire. Say if you want something to eat, our phone now gives us the option to have food deliver on our front door. If we need groceries, or want to buy something, we always have the web to obtain anything for us. Phone applications continue to give us options and solve our miniscule problems. In addition, cell phones also enables us to do various things all at once. We are now able to multitask, and it is making our lives easier.
Is the constant improvement in technology impacting our lives negatively or positively? Do you think that our demand for better technology is doing us more harm than good? Is there ever going to be a limit on how far technology will advance, or will we never be satisfied? When will we start becoming more patient and aware of our surroundings instead of being dependent on technology?

I believe that as technology improves, people want the new and improved devices such as phones. This leads to people becoming dissatisfied with what they have even though their phone was just released a year ago and since the new one is available, they want to get their hands on it. You said that "with a touch of a button, we can have absolutely anything" this means a more convenient life for the user but they eventually miss out on socializing in public. It is evident that having phones that do all the work we used to do is a lot more convenient than having to go physically but by doing this, we are becoming lazier and more dependent on these devices. I think a good question is how long until we are living like the people in the movie WALL-E, very dependent on technology's advancements? Hopefully, it may never come to this but who knows it might.
ReplyDeleteI think that technology always has a good and a bad effect. It is not what you search, but it is how you search it. Having Just read The Shallows, I am going to use some science from the book.
ReplyDeleteAs we shuffle through more and more information without having a chance to remember it, our brain is put under stress. The working memory, a part of short-term memory, is working too hard. We are not able to understand or comprehend the information we read. If we happen to, we won't remember it unless you take a special effort to. Also, new technologies tend to make blunt the things that they enhance. As we rely on technology to learn, we will be able to learn less.
I agree with Caleb that when we use technology to learn, we end up learning less. We become so dependent on the little things in life. People start using audiobooks and Sparknotes instead of taking the time to think for themselves. I definitely become dependent on my calculator in math for even the simplest tasks like addition and subtraction because it is faster, but if I were by myself it would take me way longer than it should. It makes me ask myself if I would be faster at doing simple math problems if I had not become so reliant on my calculator. This can be translated into what Bryan said about people having their groceries delivered. What is more important than getting your own groceries? It is understandable for a busy person, but what is everyone else doing and what did they do before that?
ReplyDeleteI must say that those are a couple of great questions that you have asked. Technology does have several positive and negative effects on our lives. It can never be just one because technology is something that is connected to the world as a whole. I do believe however, that there will be an end to the advancements and improvements to technology to the point where technology creates us human beings itself. Unfortunately, our continuous demand for advanced technology can be leaning towards the harmful side of society because, with it, communication is scarce amongst one another. People no longer communicate verbally with one another, but rather use their devices such as the cellphone, computer, or kindle to pass on a message. Technology in my perspective is a norm that is stripping humanity slowly as we demand more of it.
