Hiding Behind a Screen

While re-reading the summaries I wrote for Alone Together, I decided to write my last blog post about chapter 10 which discusses the difference between communicating in person vs. communicating over text. The main point of the chapter was that communicating by phone has become the preferred method of communication. However, in doing so there is a connection lost between people, because when talking in person, you can't ask your other friend how you should respond or stop talking to the person because you don't know what to say.

The chapter then goes into the difference between talking to people over text and talking to people in person. I think everybody to be able to have a conversation with somebody in person because it’s important to be able to do, because it is necessary for job interviews and other things. However, I think people choose to communicate over phones because you have time to think of a good response, and there is no need to respond immediately. If you want to you can even stop talking in the middle of a conversation which doing in person, isn’t really normal. Also, it’s easier to say certain things over text. For example, sharing telling somebody how you feel about them, apologizing, or confessing something you did are all much easier over text than they are to do in person. However, when doing these things in person, it is much more meaningful, and you there is a different connection that you can’t get from texting. Why do you think people prefer texting instead of talking in person? And do you think it’s important to be able to carry on a conversation in person?

  1. I think people prefer texting over socializing because they do not know not know how to hold a conversation that gets as interesting as it does over text. When you are behind a screen, you do not have to be directly in front of someone so you how the leisure to say whatever you wish without the feeling of embarrassment . Texting behind a phone might give people comfort because they are hiding themselves behind a screen, which in their own way keeps them anonymous to the conversation they have. It's like a safe haven from having to socialize to another person without being present. It is important to be able to carry on a conversation because like you said we need to learn these things as we go unto college and start our careers. Communications is a required quality people need to have in order to prosper and learn in life.

  2. I always choose voice calls, they just feel easier; I also get to actually hear the other person. I don't really like texting, It's so depersonalized, when you don't have to hear the person's voice, It's easy to ignore them.

  3. People prefer to text one another because they can plan what they are going to say and don't have to go through any awkwardness that may take place during a face-to-face conversation. While reading this chapter, one thing really stood out to me. It was that many prefer conversations through text messaging since it doesn't require their full attention. In an era where technology plays a large role in our lives, we are easily distracted and pressured into multitasking. Giving one's full attention to another person just isn't considered as important anymore.
