In Alone Together, by Sherry Turkle, Turkle
discusses confessional websites. These websites are available to any person,
and it is a way for them anonymously to post something. It can be a confession
or just a way for someone to get something off of their chest. Some people have
also used confessional websites to anonymously apologize to someone.
In my opinion, confessional websites are a great way for people to
relieve themselves, and they do not have to share their identity. They will not
be judged since no one will ever know it was them. However, confessional
websites do not provide any way for people to actually solve their problems.
People can rant about whatever they please for however long they like, but
nothing is actually being done to fix it. People on the websites can post
comments to those who post on it. They can provide comfort, but sometimes
people comment negatively. Posting on the website does not actually benefit the
person in helping them with their issue. More should be done if a person
actually has a reasonable or serious problem. It is hard for people to face
their problems, but technology is shielding them from it. Technology or in this
case confessional websites are an easy way for people to attempt to get help or
advice, without actually facing their problems. If people seriously wanted to
fix their problems, they would seek real help. Their problem will not go away
once the post on the website even though they may feel it has helped. Are confessional websites actually helping people?

I do believe that confessional websites could somewhat help people. If someone is insecure about their situation, it's a good way for them to be able to seek help. However, I feel that these websites are more negative than positive. On many of these websites, people use it to cyberbully. They will often confess something rude or hurtful because they are not brave enough to do it in person. I do agree with your statement that it's not really helping anyone. If the comments are anonymous, it's not really solving anything. These websites are further encouraging people to hide behind a keyboard instead of dealing with things in the real world.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that confessional websites help people. Although one can anonymously post about their problems or confessions to feel relieved, it does not help them because, like you said, they are not solving their problems, and in some cases it makes the problem worse. Some people will feel the need to talk negatively about the person and it will not solve anything. Overall, I feel that it is best to talk about our problems to a person that we trust, rather than tell someone who we do not know and does not care.
