Happiness or Freedom?

After completing the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, this book is about a utopia. This was a wanting of a perfect world. In this case, the perfect world is to make everyone happy. The novel also shows certain level groups. In order to have certain levels they choose a baby's future. The babies that are chosen to be on a lower level are shocked near books and flowers. This helps prevent them from being interested in education and nature. These babies are the Deltas. This is unfair because the babies are innocent and have not been given a chance to choose what they want. They are forced into doing things that aren't in their own willing. This can make them unhappy, but the drug soma is taken to make them high and "happy". There are some certain people who question is it better the be "happy" or be free from this utopia. This is why there is an island for these type of people. The people want to be free are people who would be sent to the island. For example, the director's lost son came to visit London and realized he did not like how the people were. They asked him if he would rather be one of the world controllers or live on the island. He decided to live in an abandoned light house and started whipping himself because he was having too much fun. Then people decided to do the same and they had an orgy-porgy. After the orgy-porgy John regretted what he did and killed himself. So would you rather be free or "happy?

  1. I guess the answer of that question depends on another question. What does it mean to be free? What does it really mean to have freedom, to have the choice of how our lives go? Because really, what is freedom if the things we do and the choices we make are only a result of what we got used to early in life? Those who can't eat pork on Fridays were taught not to, and those taught not to do alcohol don't drink alcohol cause they were conditioned not to.

So what then does being free actually mean? Nowadays, freedom isn't really seen as your own choices. Nowadays, people think of freedom as making choices that go against traditional customs or societal standards. It's really been a trend of 'what can I do to make me special, to stand out against all the others who take that path?'
