The Quote That Describes Our President

The Presidents Fake Persona

In the novel Amusing Ourselves To Death by Neil Postman, there is one specific quote that I believe perfectly describes our president and many other politicians.

This quote is,"If politics is like show business, then the idea is not to pursue excellence, clarity or honesty but to appear as if you are, which is another matter altogether."

This quote truly shows how Trump is and why he is seen the way he is. He makes very outlandish claims and promises to gain notoriety. For example, a couple weeks ago he tweets about his view against transgender soldiers in our military. To everyone this is a ridiculous idea and that it's wrong for our president to be prejudice against a group of people. Nowthough this may be true, but the two things Trump succeeded in doing was gaining notoriety and being the main thing talked about. Even before this reckless claim he has said some very ear curling statements about women. But this was all behind closed doors and once exposed about his statements he tried to go back on what he said and apologized. This situation shows that he has to put up a fake persona and hide his real ideas. He tries to make it seem as though he's a great business man, trustworthy because he's successful, and is the best option our country has at being great again. Yet this is all just a fake persona tom make him appear to be a good person.

  1. I believe, as you said, that it's just a strategy that our president is using. It's the perfect thing for him to do in order to improve upon his own situation. After reading Postman's book, you start to understand how if you act a certain way, people will follow you because they don't know what's going on behind the curtain. Trump may appear to practice politics, when maybe he just has a scripted speech that leads people to believe he knows what he is doing. And the fact that he was (and still really is) so popular on social media just helped him fool a whole lot of people.
